Roamly

How Roamly works

From an empty browser tab to talking to someone, in six steps. The whole thing takes about a minute, and five of the six steps need nothing from you.

  1. 1. Open the page

There is nothing to install. playroamly.com loads in the browser you are already using, on a laptop or a phone.

  2. 2. Enter a birth year

One dropdown, and it is the only thing Roamly asks you for. Under 16 is turned away. The year itself is never stored — your browser keeps a token proving the check passed, and the server keeps nothing.

  3. 3. Get a name and a face

The server assigns a nickname in the shape blue_ninja_726, unique among everyone currently online, and picks one of eight avatars at random. Both are yours for the session and released when you leave.

  4. 4. Walk

Arrow keys or WASD on a keyboard, tap-to-move on a touchscreen. Movement is drawn instantly on your screen and confirmed by the server behind it, so it stays responsive on a bad connection.

  5. 5. Talk

Type into the box at the bottom. Room reaches your whole instance; Nearby reaches players within six tiles. Messages appear above the heads of the people saying them, and are gone the moment they are delivered.

  6. 6. Find a spot

Six landmarks are built into the map and each collects a different crowd — the Campfire and Dance Floor are where the noise is, the Cliff Lookout and Sea View are where it is not.
